Mastodon and "NSFW"

This is recorded anonymously with permission, because I didn’t know about this and expect others won’t either. And, contrary to the title, this may just be an issue with Pleroma, not Mastodon.

Did you know mastodon “removed” the nsfw button because of it having a lot of problems, but only in the UI?

That’s right, the backend still gets a lot of mileage out of the phrase! It’s used for sensitive content in a manner that is HIDDEN from users, not even knowing that their posts will federate to things that don’t support the weird, hidden hashtag, by adding it in plain sight

It still functionally exists, too! The reason it was added as an invisible hashtag was for “backwards compatibility”, with ostatus I believe, a software that… no longer sees much use, and was primarily so that users could mute it to not see posts of that variety

But by that logic, any tag works.

Like.

Like “sensitive content”, the phrase that was switched to because users argued about “nsfw” being anti-sex worker, enforcing a certain type of shitty social norm… etcetc

But nah

We’ll just leave that hash tag in there, hidden but still very present, encouraging usage of the term

Don’t believe me? Use your instance to search “#nsfw” and you’ll find a bunch of posts that DONT have that hashtag in it, anywhere

even… though they show up under the search

because it’s hidden, in the post, because that post is marked as “sensitive content”
