Identify Biological Organization Level

Identify the level of biological organization (molecular, cellular, organismal, population, ecosystem) relevant to a question or phenomenon.

Given a biological question or phenomenon:

  1. Determine the primary level of organization: molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, organism, population, community, ecosystem, or biosphere.
  2. Identify which higher and lower levels are relevant (biology is multi-scale — cell processes affect ecosystems, ecosystem conditions affect cells).
  3. Name the appropriate subdiscipline (molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, ecology, etc.).
  4. Suggest the key terms and concepts from this vault that apply.
