Scope

If the genealogy asks how dialectics
came to be, this history asks how dialectics has been historically used,
reworked, institutionalized, and contested.

The focus here is modern and contemporary circulation: from Hegel’s
system, through Marxist transformation, into twentieth-century party,
critical-theoretical, and anti-colonial formations.

1) Nineteenth century pivot: from speculative system to social critique

Hegel’s mature work made dialectics a comprehensive philosophical method
for conceptual development [@hegel-dialectics-sep-2019]. By the later
nineteenth century, Marx’s intervention shifted the center of gravity.
Marx’s own formulation in the 1873 afterword is explicit: he inverts
Hegel’s method by grounding movement in material social relations
[@marx-capital-afterword-1873].
