3D Printing Quickstart

Assumed audience

  • Reading level: general adult.
  • Background: no engineering required.
  • Goal: print a simple object safely.

What you need

  • An FDM 3D printer.
  • PLA filament.
  • Slicer software.
  • A simple model file (STL).

Steps

  1. Load filament and preheat the nozzle.
  2. Open the model in your slicer.
  3. Choose a basic profile (0.2 mm layer height, 20 percent infill).
  4. Slice and export gcode.
  5. Start the print and watch the first layer.

First-layer checklist

  • The filament should stick without gaps.
  • Lines should touch, not be separated.
  • If the first layer fails, stop and re-level the bed.

After the print

  • Let the part cool before removal.
  • Clean edges with a knife or sandpaper if needed.

Safety and hazards

  • Avoid printing small parts for children unless they are labeled as choking hazards.
  • If a part is a choking hazard, emboss a warning on the part or include it in packaging notes.
