Start Seeds Indoors
- Read the seed packet for the recommended number of weeks before last frost to start seeds indoors.
- Fill small containers (with drainage holes) with seed-starting mix. Do not use garden soil, which is too dense and may carry disease organisms.
- Plant seeds at the depth specified on the packet. As a general rule, plant a seed at a depth of two to three times its diameter.
- Water gently until the mix is moist but not waterlogged. Keep consistently moist throughout germination.
- Place containers in a warm location with adequate light: a bright south-facing window or under a grow light for 12–16 hours per day.
- Once seedlings emerge, ensure they receive strong light to prevent weak, leggy growth.
- When seedlings have their first set of true leaves (the second pair, after the initial seed leaves), thin to one seedling per container if needed.
- Begin hardening off one week before the transplant date by placing seedlings outdoors for increasing periods each day.
