A layer of material spread on the soil surface around plants. Mulch reduces water evaporation, moderates soil temperature, suppresses weed growth, and (if organic) adds nutrients as it decomposes. Common mulch materials include wood chips, straw, shredded leaves, and compost. Inorganic mulches such as gravel or landscape fabric suppress weeds but do not add nutrients.
