Engineering is the discipline of applying scientific knowledge, mathematical methods, and empirical evidence to the design, construction, and operation of structures, machines, materials, systems, and processes. It is distinguished from pure science by its orientation toward making things work under constraint — physical, economic, temporal, and material. The engineer does not merely describe the world; the engineer builds within it, accepting that every solution is a compromise among competing requirements.

The discipline fragments into branches defined by the domain of application — civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, aerospace — each with its own methods, materials, and institutional traditions. What unifies them is the engineering method: the systematic translation of requirements into specifications, specifications into designs, designs into artifacts, and artifacts into operational systems, with feedback at every stage.
