Gambling games inherit from two distinct lineages that converged: games of chance played for entertainment and wagering practices attached to non-game events. The games we recognize today sit at the intersection.

The chance-game lineage. Dice, knucklebones, and drawing lots produced structured uncertain outcomes. These were played socially before anyone attached stakes to them. Over centuries, the instruments became more standardized (fair dice, shuffled cards, balanced wheels) and the rules more formal. The design pressure was toward games that felt fair and produced clear winners — prerequisites for wagering but not dependent on it.

The wagering lineage. Betting on outcomes — races, fights, harvests, weather, births — predates game design. The wager is an agreement structure, not a game mechanic: two parties commit value to opposing predictions about an external event. When this wagering structure was applied to games of chance, gambling games emerged. The combination allowed the uncertain event to be produced on demand (roll the dice, deal the cards) rather than waited for (the next horse race, the next harvest).

Branching by decision structure. Once wagering attached to games, the games diverged by how much player agency they incorporated. One branch kept the player passive: place your bet, then watch (roulette, slots, lottery). Another branch gave the player decisions within the game that affected outcomes (blackjack, poker, sports handicapping). This split tracks different appeals — passive gambling offers the thrill of pure risk; active gambling offers the sense of earned advantage.

The house as a third lineage. Organized gambling introduced the operator as a designed participant. The house does not play the game — it structures the game so that aggregate play generates reliable revenue. This produced a distinct design tradition: games optimized not for player enjoyment alone but for the dual objective of entertaining players while extracting a mathematical edge. Slot machine design, casino floor layout, and the calibration of near-miss frequencies all belong to this lineage.

Digital convergence. Online platforms collapsed the distinction between game families by making all games software. A poker hand, a slot spin, and a sports bet are all server events returning outcomes to a client. This convergence enabled hybrid forms (casino games with skill elements, skill games with prize pools, prediction markets) that do not fit cleanly into any single genealogical branch.
