Fred Moten (born 1962) is an American poet, scholar, and critical theorist whose work on Blackness, aesthetics, and fugitivity has reshaped the fields of Black studies, performance theory, and political philosophy. A professor at New York University, Moten’s writing moves between poetry, philosophy, and improvisation, enacting the forms of thought it describes.

  • The undercommons: developed with Stefano Harney in The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning and Black Study (2013), the undercommons names the spaces of study, care, and collective life that persist within and against institutional structures. It is not a place but a condition — inhabited through refusal of institutional legibility, through fugitive relation, through the ongoing practice of being together in ways the institution cannot capture.
  • Study: for Moten, study is not scholarship but the ongoing, informal, collective practice of thinking-together that happens in the breaks — in the moments and spaces not captured by institutional accounting. Study is what the university tries to contain and what the undercommons practices without permission.
  • Fugitivity: not escape but the ongoing practice of being uncaptured — existing in ways that resist the categories (property, person, citizen, student) through which the state and the institution manage life.
  • The Black radical tradition: Moten’s work locates Blackness not as identity but as a position — the position of those who have been constituted as property and who, from that position, generate forms of sociality, beauty, and thought that exceed every attempt at containment.

Significance for this research

Moten and Harney’s undercommons appears in emsenn’s “The theory that survived the war” and “Citing for containment” as the condition that disappears when it is made legible — the forest defense was the undercommons when people refused to render it, and ceased to be the moment it became a case study. Their concept of study names the kind of embedded, relational knowledge-making that opacity protects and that institutional legibility destroys.
