Autopoiesis (from the Greek auto, self, and poiesis, making or production) is a concept introduced by Chilean biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela to characterize the organization of living systems. An autopoietic system is one that continuously produces the components and processes that constitute it: it makes itself. The system’s organization (the relations between components) is invariant, but its structure (the specific components) is continuously replaced through the system’s own activity.

A cell is the paradigmatic example. The membrane, the metabolic pathways, the molecular machinery — all are products of the cell’s own activity, and all are necessary for that activity to continue. The cell does not receive its organization from outside; it generates and maintains it through its own operations. The boundary between system and environment is not externally given but self-produced: the membrane is a product of the metabolism it encloses.

The concept has philosophical consequences that extend beyond biology. If an autopoietic system defines its own boundaries and generates its own components, then what counts as “input” and “output” is determined by the system, not by an external observer. The system is operationally closed: its operations refer to its own states, not to representations of an external world. This does not mean the system is isolated — it is structurally coupled with its environment and perturbed by it — but the meaning of a perturbation is determined by the system’s own organization, not by the perturbation itself.

This makes autopoiesis a form of relational ontology at the system level: the system is constituted by the relations among its components, and those components exist only as participants in those relations. A molecule outside the cell may be chemically identical to one inside, but it is not a component of the autopoietic system — component-hood is a relational property, not an intrinsic one.

For this research program, autopoiesis connects to the semiotic universe through the concept of closure: the semiotic universe’s least fixed point (the initial semiotic structure) is the sign-theoretic analog of autopoietic self-production — a structure that generates and sustains itself through its own operations.
