drainage

Defines drainage

How quickly water moves through soil. Drainage depends on soil texture and structure. Well-drained soil allows water to pass through within a few hours; poorly drained soil holds water for a day or more, which can suffocate roots. Drainage is tested by filling a 30 cm deep hole with water and timing how long it takes to empty.
