hardening off

Defines hardening off

The process of gradually exposing indoor-grown seedlings to outdoor conditions over the course of a week before transplanting them permanently. Seedlings are placed outside for increasing periods each day, allowing them to adjust to direct sunlight, wind, and temperature fluctuations. Skipping this step often results in transplant shock.
