capture
A capture in weiqi occurs when a move removes the last liberty from an opposing stone or connected group, after which those stones are removed from the board [@britannica2026go; @nagofed2026thisisgo].
Capture is the game’s basic tactical enforcement rule. Without it, enclosure would carry no force. But weiqi is not a pure capture race, because players usually capture in order to secure shape, reduce influence, or stabilize territory, not only to remove material.
