territory
Territory in weiqi is the set of vacant points effectively enclosed by one player’s stones and unavailable to the opponent except at unacceptable cost [@britannica2026go; @nagofed2026thisisgo].
Territory is the strategic heart of the game because it turns placement into scoring. A move may increase territory directly by closing space, or indirectly by making an invasion weak. This is why players often choose moves that neither attack nor defend a single group immediately but instead reshape the balance of large empty regions.
