pip
A pip in dice games is one of the spots marking value on a die face, and by extension the face value those spots represent [@britannica2026dice; @britannica2026backgammon].
Pips matter because they make random outcomes machine-readable for players. A die is useful only because the marks on its faces can be counted quickly and translated into movement, sums, or other consequences under the rules.
