A session is a single continuous period of play in a role-playing game, typically lasting two to five hours. Sessions are the basic unit of scheduling and pacing: groups agree to meet for a session, and the game master structures content to fit within that window.
A well-paced session usually contains a mix of exploration, social interaction, and conflict, with a recognizable arc โ even when the larger campaign story extends across many sessions. Ending a session at a moment of tension or resolution gives players something to anticipate or reflect on before the next meeting.
Practical considerations shape sessions as much as narrative ones. Player fatigue, real-world schedules, and the cognitive load of sustained improvisation all limit how long productive play can last. Many groups find that shorter, more frequent sessions produce better play than infrequent marathons.
