Branch and Sequel Plans

A planning paradigm for adaptation: branches are contingency options within a plan; sequels are subsequent plans based on possible outcomes.
Defines branch plan, sequel plan

Branch and sequel plans are a paradigm for planning under uncertainty.

  • A branch is a contingency option within the current plan (if X happens, we do Y).
  • A sequel is a subsequent plan based on a possible outcome of the current operation (if we succeed/fail/partially succeed, what next).

The value of branches and sequels is that they turn uncertainty into explicit decision points and preparation tasks.
