Priority Intelligence Requirements (PIR)

Intelligence requirements the commander deems critical to decision making, usually tied to specific decision points and triggers.
Defines PIR

Priority Intelligence Requirements (PIR) are intelligence requirements the commander deems critical to decision making. They typically correspond to questions like:

  • Which enemy course of action is occurring?
  • Where is a capability that would change our plan?
  • Has the enemy committed a reserve?

The key is coupling PIR to decision support:

  • PIR without decision points becomes “nice to know.”
  • Decision points without PIR become decisions made blind.
