Improvisation

Real-time compositional decision-making within a framework of constraints.
Defines Improvisation, improvisatory

Improvisation is the practice of making musical decisions in real time during performance — composing and performing simultaneously. It is not the absence of structure but the navigation of structure: the improviser works within constraints (a scale, a rhythmic framework, a harmonic progression, a social convention, a tradition) and makes choices that are at once responsive to the moment and shaped by deep practice.

Western music education has tended to treat improvisation as either a primitive stage before “real” composition or an advanced skill reserved for specialists (jazz soloists, organ improvisers). But across the world’s musical traditions, improvisation is the norm rather than the exception. The fixed, fully notated musical work — reproducible identically across performances — is a historical anomaly specific to a particular period of European art music. Most of the music humans have made has involved substantial real-time decision-making.

Improvisation is inherently relational. The solo improviser relates to the instrument, to the tradition, to the room, to their own body’s state. The ensemble improviser relates to all of these and to the other musicians — listening, responding, anticipating, provoking. Call-and-response is a formalized improvisatory relation. Jazz rhythm section interaction is an informal one. Tishoumaren guitar traditions involve collective improvisation within melodic and rhythmic frameworks inherited from Tuareg musical practice.

  • Call-and-response — a structured framework for improvisatory exchange
  • Polyrhythm — a rhythmic framework within which improvisation occurs
  • Rhythm — the temporal dimension of improvisatory decision-making
  • Melody — the pitch dimension of improvisatory decision-making
