Domination is the structural condition in which one party’s capacity for self-determination is systematically constrained by another’s exercise of power. It is not a single act of force but a sustained arrangement — a relationship maintained through hierarchy, authority, coercion, dependence, or the organization of material and social life so that refusal is punished and compliance is compelled. Anarchism defines itself as opposition to domination in all its forms.

The breadth of this definition is the point. Liberalism opposes specific forms of domination — tyranny, censorship, certain kinds of discrimination — while accepting others as legitimate or necessary: the employer’s authority over the worker, the state’s monopoly on violence, the property owner’s right to exclude. Marxism centers the domination of capital over labor but accepts the state as a transitional instrument. Anarchism refuses these exceptions. The claim is that domination is the problem — not this or that particular kind, but the structural relationship itself, wherever it appears.

This produces a distinctive analytical habit: anarchism reads across domains. The domination of the state over its subjects, the employer over the worker, the colonizer over the colonized, the man over the woman, the adult over the child, the human over the nonhuman — these are not separate problems requiring separate theories but instances of the same structural relationship. Green anarchism holds that ecological destruction and social domination share a root. Youth liberation holds that age-based hierarchy is continuous with other forms. Total liberation names the convergence: the liberation of any one group is incomplete without the liberation of all, because domination is a structure that connects them.

Domination is not the same as power. People exercise power in every relationship — influence, persuasion, coordination, care. Domination is the subset of power that operates through fixed hierarchy: where positions are arranged vertically, where the relationship is not mutual, and where the subordinated party cannot exit or refuse without consequences imposed by the dominant party. This is why voluntary association is the foundational anarchist principle: a relationship you can leave without punishment is a relationship that must sustain itself through mutual benefit rather than through domination.
